Businesses in Bhopal that supply goods or services above the prescribed limits must register under GST. Some types of business must register regardless of turnover. This page explains who needs to register, which documents are required, and how the application works. Junaid Khan & Co. assists businesses with the full process.
Who needs GST registration?
- Turnover threshold. Madhya Pradesh is a normal-category state. Suppliers exclusively of goods must register once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh in a financial year, and suppliers of services once it crosses ₹20 lakh. Certain goods are excluded from the higher limit, and a ₹20 lakh threshold applies to them.
- Compulsory registration regardless of turnover. This applies, among others, to:
- inter-state taxable suppliers of goods
- persons liable under reverse charge
- e-commerce operators, and certain sellers supplying through them
- casual taxable persons
- persons required to deduct TDS or collect TCS under GST
- Voluntary registration. A business below the threshold may still register, for example to claim input tax credit or to meet buyer requirements.
Documents generally required
- PAN of the business or proprietor
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, plus photographs
- Proof of business constitution: partnership deed, certificate of incorporation, LLP agreement, etc.
- Proof of principal place of business, such as an electricity bill, rent agreement or NOC from the owner
- Bank account details (a cancelled cheque or statement)
- Authorisation letter or board resolution for the authorised signatory
Registration process
- Part A of the GST REG-01 form is submitted on the GST portal, with PAN, mobile and email verified by OTP.
- Part B is completed with business details, places of business, goods and services (HSN/SAC) and the bank account.
- Aadhaar authentication is done. In some cases biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra may be required.
- The application is processed by the department, which may raise queries (REG-03). Replies are filed in REG-04.
- Once approved, the GSTIN and registration certificate (REG-06) are issued.
Composition scheme
Eligible small taxpayers can opt for the composition scheme, which has simpler returns and tax at a fixed rate on turnover. The turnover limit is generally ₹1.5 crore for goods. Conditions apply, including restrictions on inter-state supplies and on input tax credit. Whether the scheme suits a business depends on its customer base and costs.
After registration
Registration brings ongoing obligations: periodic returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B), the annual return where applicable, invoicing rules and record-keeping. The firm’s GST compliance and filing service covers these. Matching books with GST returns is part of our accounting and bookkeeping work.
